Oranim Educational Initiatives

Statement on Drugs and Alcohol

TO BE READ AND SIGNED BOTH BY APPLICANT AND PARENT

1.       In order to participate fully in the demanding activities of the Oranim Educational Initiatives, it is essential that all members be able to devote their full attention to the program.  Although medical evidence is not available as yet on the long-range effect that marijuana and other drugs have on the body, it is clear that the use of such materials interferes with the ability of individuals to function in such activities.

2.       Based on this important fact, as well as the severe federal and state penalties now in law books for possession and use of any kind of non-medical and non-prescription drug, it is the firm policy of Oranim Educational Initiatives that the possession or use of such substances will not be tolerated.  The same laws are in effect in each country we will visit.  It is the policy of Oranim Educational Initiatives to allow the police and justice departments of the countries visited to prosecute infractions without intervention by Oranim Educational Initiatives.  This is also the policy of the US Embassies.

3.       Therefore, all those who are accepted as participants in any of the summer programs must understand that any infraction in possession or use of non-medical or non-prescription drugs (this includes alcohol) may mean AUTOMATIC EXPULSION from the program.  In such cases, the return transportation will be at the participant’s OWN EXPENSE, and there cannot be ANY REFUND for the part of the program missed.  Any other additional expenses will also be the responsibility of the participant’s family.

4.       It is especially important for those traveling overseas to know that special precautions to prevent the transportation of drugs in and out of the U.S. and all countries to be visited are now being taken by customs agents, including a thorough search of baggage, personal belongings and clothing.

5.       These policies are being shared in writing with all those who are accepted for these programs in order to provide clear guidelines and to inform both participants and their parents of the policy governing these events.

***NOTE***

The authorities in Israel and most European countries are especially harsh in dealing with drug offenders.  Possession and use are criminal offenses.
